River Phoenix as Mike

This photo was taken while shooting the film My Own Private Idaho (1991). It is an American independent adventure drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant. My Own Private Idaho had its premiere at the 48th Venice International Film Festival, and received largely positive reviews. But it was a moderate financial success. Phoenix received several awards for his performance in the film, including the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1991 Venice Film Festival, Best Male Lead from the Independent Spirit Awards, and Best Actor from the National Society of Film Critics. In this picture we can see the actor River Phoenix doing a scene on the set of the film. Two years after its release, River Phoenix died from “acute multiple drug intoxication” including deadly amounts of cocaine and morphine.
